چکیده
Abstract It is well established that early bilinguals who speak languages differ in the phonetic implementation of voicing contrast have language-specific systems. This study investigates separation two true-voicing languages, Basque and Spanish. We also describe system Gipuzkoan Spanish Basque, which closest dialect to Standard it has not yet been investigated experimentally. Twenty Basque-Spanish bilingual speakers dialects participated picture naming tasks. described their by measuring voice onset time (VOT) both Spanish, used linear mixed-effects models investigate between-language production differences. Our results show for first adult produce VOT ‘voiced’ plosives. finding demonstrates bilinguals’ systems during are more fine-grained than previously assumed, contributes a deeper understanding granularity

Voice Onset Time and the Perception of Japanese Voicing Contrasts
Much crosslinguistic research exists on the production and perception of voice onset time (VOT). However, most research on the perception of VOT uses synthetic stimuli instead of natural speech stimuli. Effects of synthetic speech on the perception of VOT are not known, but more research needs to be done to see if there are differences between perception using synthetic speech and perception us...
متن کاملA cross-language study of range of voice onset time in the perception of initial stop voicing
A series of experiments was carded out to compare the extent of range effects in the phonetic ategorization. of voice onset ime (VOT} by speakers of Polish and of English, two languages which contrast different VOT categories. Results indicate that Poles are more prone to range effects than are Americans. For acoustic continua with appr•able numbers of prevoiced stimuli, monolingual Polish spea...
متن کاملEffects of obstruent voicing on vowel F0: Evidence from "true voicing" languages.
This study investigates consonant-related F0 perturbations ("CF0") in French and Italian by comparing the effects of voiced and voiceless obstruents on F0 to those of voiced sonorants. The voiceless obstruents /p f/ in both languages are found to have F0-raising properties similar to American English voiceless obstruents, while F0 following the (pre)voiced obstruents /b v/ in French and Italian...
متن کاملCross-language analysis of voice onset time in stuttered speech
This study compares the VOT measurements between Persian and English stutterers. The speech samples of five adult stutterers (four males and one female) of each language were recorded during a reading task. 98 stuttering events in words beginning with plosives and 34 fluent plosives (i.e., final fluent iterations following the stuttered portions of speech) were identified in the data of both gr...
متن کاملVoice Onset Time (VOT) at 50: Theoretical and practical issues in measuring voicing distinctions
Just over fifty years ago, Lisker and Abramson proposed a straightforward measure of acoustic differences among stop consonants of different voicing categories, voice onset time (VOT). Since that time, hundreds of studies have used this method. Here, we review the original definition of VOT, propose some extensions to the definition, and discuss some problematic cases. We propose a set of terms...
